April is Adopt-A-Greyhound Month

Comet may have the winning-est Hollywood smile of the thousands who entered the Petroxdex Superstar Smiles Photo Contest. Comet was undoubtedly honored to win. But what really is nice is that Comet’s smile now shines the spotlight on Greyhound adoption. I wrote about Comet’s back-story and his life today as an ‘Ambassadog‘  for my national…

Camp Dogwood Gallery

I had David Eisendrath of Camp Dogwood on my WLS Radio show, and also Camp Dogwood was featured recently in USA Today. We attempted to describe the experience on the air, but seeing the pictures might give you a better idea. At this place, it’s all about the dogs – and they seem to know…

America Loses A Great American Pet Writer

Profound, that is how I describe Mordecai Siegal’s influence as a pet writer. After suffering declining health for several years, the venerable author of 33 books just passed away. In 1970 when Morty and dog trainer Matthew Margolis teamed up for their first of 10 books together, “Good Dog, Bad Dog,” and as a result…

Chicago Blackhawks Help Homeless Pets

I visited Urban Outsitters on Randolph St., where Lake Shore Animal Shelter has lots of adoptable dogs. The Chicago Blackhawks TV crew joined me there, and also at Tree House Humane Society. The result will be our debut video on Sunday at the UC which will be shown between periods of the Hawks’ game. Here’s…

According to a Hungarian study (from Current Biology, 2003), dogs do far better at understanding people or even making the attempt, compared to socialized wolves.  Wolf These days, for reasons I don’t quite get – some are equating dogs and wolves. Sure, they’re…

Dog Camp: Where Dogs Can Be Dogs

Sending your kids off to camp this summer? I mean fur kids. Camp Dogwood gives your dog a chance to be a dog. There are now camps for dogs all over America, but in Ingleside, IL, Camp Dogwood is Chicago area choice. Dogs can swim the old fashioned way, just by their people tossing toys…

Chicago Blackhawks Scoring For Shelter Adoptions

The Chicago Blackhawks shot a video supporting pet adoption at the Tree House Humane Society, and here at Urban Outsitters on Randolph, where Lake Shore Animal Shelter dogs are. Soon, the finished product will be shown between periods at the UC. When that happens, there will be no stopping the Blackhawks.

Smiling Dog Contest – Who Do You Think Won?

At least, 2,000 people submitted photos of happy dogs with pearly whites waiting to be discovered in the Petrodex Superstar Smiles Photo contest. However, only one dog won. Here (in this gallery) are the ten finalists. Look at all 10 first, and then click on this Superstar Smiles site, and a cartoon mini-me will tell…

Deaf Dogs Are Fur Angels

Deaf dogs make quality pets no different than dogs that aren’t hearing impaired. Sure, screaming the dog’s name doesn’t help, so hand signals are required. The truth is that dogs are better at following our body language than our voice commands, so training is easier. And for safety, deaf dogs need to be kept on…
