Cost of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Mark Russak, member of the Board of Directors of North American Veterinary Community and a Past President American Animal Hospital Association chats openly on my national Steve Dale’s Pet World radio show about the cost of veterinary medicine.
We begin by attempting to describe what a bargain veterinary medicine is – the problem is that unless you have pet insurance you have to pay it.
He says, “The general public doesn’t want cheap veterinary medicine; they want affordable veterinary medicine.”
He explains that the average young veterinarian has loans over $150,00 to pay back and a family. Of course, if the practice is privately owned, like any other small business, there are taxes and there may be rent. Employees need to be paid. And equipment that you want – the latest and greatest is often identical to what’s used in human medicine.
Russak rattles off ways which veterinary medicine may be more affordable.
