Dr. Justine Lee on Post Pandemic Separation Anxiety
Dr. Justine Lee, a critical care specialist, co-founder of VetGirl (source of CE for veterinary professionals) and pet expert at Pumpkin pet insurance. On my national Steve Dale’s Pet World radio show we talk about how to help the pets adjust post quarantine, once kids go back to school in person and mom and dad leave the house more often. Dr. Lee is happy about the 700 percent increase in pet adoptions around the country at the onset and beginning of the pandemic, but what happens when everyone goes away? Dr. Lee says she’s “worried,” anticipating more separation anxiety. Now, what to do about it? She explains.
First we talk about identifying if it is really separation anxiety in the first place.
Dr. Lee offers tips about what to do right now. And how to desensitize and counter-condition dogs to cues that we’re departing the house. And she offers tips about what not to do. Even a ceiling fan, classical music and turning on the TV can help (of course, I am all for turning on talk radio).
Here’s a segment I did on Good Morning America on this topic.
