Jackson Galaxy on Winn Feline Foundation

Jackson Galaxy from Animal Planet’s “My Cat From Hell” and certified animal behavior consultant, TV/radio personality and columnist Steve Dale – a longtime Board Member – chat informally about the Winn Feline Foundation. They agree that every cat alive today has been touched by advances in medicine supported at one time or another by the Winn Feline Foundation.

The Winn Feline Foundation funds cat health studies….There are hundreds of examples which impact cat lives today. Winn funding helped veterinarians to understand there wasn’t enough of an amino acid called taurine in manufactured cat foods about 40 years ago. Far more recently, Winn funding has helped researchers to better understand feline diabetes, and even how some cats may go into remission.

Jackson, who focuses on behavior, would like to see more studies done regarding feline hyperesthesia syndrome. It’s referred to as a syndrome, in part, because it’s so little understood. Winn funds cat health studies so illnesses may be better understood, and ultimately to support finding treatments, even cures.

Steve talks about the Ricky Fund. He named the fund for an amazing cat who suddenly died as a result of feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most common heart disease in cats and most common cause of sudden death in cats.

The fund has raised over $100,000 since its inception. Studies have given cardiac veterinarians a far better understanding of the disease itself. Also, now a simple and inexpensive cheek swab can now help breeders determine if a gene defect for HCM exists in Ragdoll or Main Coon cats; if the defect exists in an individual, the decision may be made not to breed. The result, less HCM in those breeds. The goal, though, to impact HCM in all cats.
