McDonald's Apologizes About Pit Bull Mention

Share

True – trying new menu items at McDonald’s, not risky. I’d argue, that’s fun.

In a radio spot, the voice over guy said shaving your head, naming your son ‘Sue,’ all risky – and so is petting a stray Pit Bull.

I realize it was just a fun radio spot, or supposed to be. But then the image this helps to perpetuate of Pit Bull-type dogs is incredibly detrimental, as well as untrue (though I wouldn’t generally advise petting any stray dog). My blog and many others jumped on this. Pages instantly appeared on Facebook to contest the ad.

In fact, I was so surprised that the spot made it past McDonald’s legal and due diligence, I thought it was a practical joke created by some animal right activists (because they’ve long protested McDonald’s). To be fair to McDonald’s I verified the spot before reporting.

Was no joke – and when McDonald’s received the start of an onslaught of complaints, here was their official response, which I received in an email.

“In our effort to spread the word about our new Chicken McBites, a local
radio ad inadvertently offended some of our customers. The ad was
insensitive in its mention of pit bulls. We apologize. As soon as we
learned of it, we tracked the source and had the local markets pull the
ad *immediately*. We¹ll do a better job next time. It¹s never our intent
to offend anyone with how we communicate news about McDonald’s.”

That was the statement…Received this added note.

“Steve,  Again, we  regret that anyone was offended.”

The McDonald’s response was immediate, unambiguous and apologetic – not sure what more anyone could ask. I’ll soon be ordering those McBites, and likely lovin’ it.
