Mother Birds Know Best

Share

This is the ultimate chicken and egg question. According to Science Daily, mother birds ‘talk’ to their chicks before they hatch.

So, what do they tell them?
Do they chirp about Obama care? Or perhaps, flying conditions? Probably, not.

Well, scientists looked at Canaries – and learned by attending to messages in the egg, nestlings gain weight more rapidly
because they match their demands to the parents’ supply of food, and
can avoid either begging too little or wasting effort on unrewarded
begging.

“This work changes our understanding of the pre-natal environment in
birds,” says Dr Rebecca Kilner of the University of Cambridge, who led
the research.
