If it’s good enough for CNN, MTV, the E Entertainment channel, and countless radio stations around the country - I figure I can do it too. Here’s my own countdown of the top five pet stories of 2005.
“We should all watch our dogs go to the bathroom,” begins Dr. James Richards, director of the Cornell Feline Health Center at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Ithaca, NY. “We should also see what’s in the litter box, but most of us don’t,” he begins to laugh. “Certainly, I understand why you’d want to avert your gaze to what’s inside (the box). The truth is that by gauging what your cat eats and then what comes out the other end, you have an important barometer of your kitty cat’s health,” he says.
The Baghdad Zoo and its residents were an early casualty of the war in Iraq. Once the home to more than 600 animals, mortar rounds released many animals into the city who were ultimately either shot or starved to death. Damage to the zoo’s infrastructure was significant.
ABC-TV news medical contributor Dr. Tim Johnson said, “Pregnant women, women who are about to become pregnant and people with weakened immune systems, including those who are undergoing chemo or have AIDS, should avoid cats and cat litter.”
Mahatma Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Based on that standard, America clearly is not so great – not yet.
