Sheriff Tom Dart on Steve Dale's Pet World to Announce a Tougher Dogfighting Law
Dogfighting is bad enough. But can you imagine dogfighters practicing their horror at a day care center? That actually happened last September. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart made the bust in Maywood, IL and it made national news.
When I had Sheriff Dart
on my WLS Radio Show. On-the-air, I suggested that as horrific as dogfighting is – somehow if it’s carried out at a day care center, near a children’s playground or near a school – it’s even worse than horrific. Sheriff Dart agreed. And I said that there be and increased felony for dogfighting when it’s associated with a day care center, playground or school. I enlisted Ledy VanKavage of Best Friends to write the bill, and Dart’s legislative people ushered the bill through. It happened! Presumably Governor Quinn will sign HB 5790 this summer. (Now, my hope is that other states will do the same).
I will congratulate Sheriff Dart and Ledy on Steve Dale’s Pet World, Saturday May 1 after 2 p.m.cst – AM 890-WLS.
Also on the show, Dr. Robyn Barbiers, president of the Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago. She’ll report on Bark in the Park (which is being held Saturday morning), and on the 100 or so dogs taken in by the shelter from a puppy mill raid in Tennessee. She’ll report on the condition of the dogs, and tell us when they will be available for adoption. Unbelievably, the municipal facility in Chicago actually criticized Anti-Cruelty for saving lives (Isn’t that what they’re supposed to do?).
