Traveling with Cats

Thinking of traveling with your cat with summer? Dr. Todd McCracken of Ceva Animal Health says sometimes the best solution: Leave the cat at home.

McCracken appeared on my national Steve Dale’s Pet World radio show talking about the stress of pet travel HERE.

In a car, cats should always be in carriers

Before traveling, he says, it’s a good idea to get a veterinary exam, then insure the cat is in a carrier in the car, and that the cat is acclimated to the carrier. Now – before you travel – is the time to accustom the cat to a carrier.

Begin by using Feliway spray to help the cat feel less stressed about the carrier, and more comfortable feeling “it’s mine.” Drop food periodically into the carrier so it becomes an automatic food dispenser. If the cat goes into the carrier voluntarily (that’s your goal), now only good things happen, such as the cat being fed. Here’s a piece I did for Fetch 360 on carrier and car training cats.

Bring familiar smelling objects on your road trips, toys and also blankets or a place that smells familiar.

Over the summer, more kids may visit your kids. Two concerns:

  • Stress of kids running all over the home just being kids.
  • The door opening an closing, and the increased likelihood of a cat getting out – so insure the cats are microchipped and that all microchipped pets are registered with the microchip provider with up to date contact information.  If your contact info isn’t there or is out of date, there can be no reuniting you and your pet.
